Really inspiring, Robert! When my family visits Guangzhou (the first time for many of us), we're hoping to retrace some of our roots too, referencing our 家譜

While the story is moving, I feel no particular affinity for these so-called family genealogies. To put it bluntly, these powerful historical clans were little more than local tyrants—"feudal lords" who administered their own extrajudicial tribunals, brutally oppressing their members, especially women. In a modern context, doesn’t the current craze for "compiling genealogies" simply evoke a longing for past status and a desire to stand apart from the "common" family? No matter how stirring these tales of aristocratic lineages may be, they cannot mask the ugly historical reality: a history of servility toward imperial power while simultaneously preying on local villagers and subjugating women.
